Joan Daisy Masters

  Joan Daisy Masters November 19, 1925 – December 13, 2025   Joan Daisy Masters, a cherished mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at St. Patrick’s Mercy home on December 13, 2025 at the remarkable age of 100. Joan is predeceased by her husband, Samuel Masters, her grandson Darrell Collett and son-in-laws Fred Leaman and Norman Collett. She is survived by her four children, Wendy, Doreen (Roy), Beryl (Bruce) and Brian (Sherry); her ten grandchildren Norma, Chris (Louisa), Dennis (Cristina), Sheila, Steven (Lori), Michelle (Pierre), Kim (Jack), Jeremy (Amanda), Stephanie (Sheldon) and Heather (Travis); and her 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Joan was born in Kent, England on November 19, 1925. During World War II, Joan enlisted and was an active member of the British Land Army. It was during that time that Joan met and married Samuel, a member of the Newfoundland Regiment. As a British war bride she travelled the ocean in 1946 to begin a new life in Fairhaven, Newfoundland. It was here that Joan and Samuel created a home and life where they raised their family and became part of the community. Those who knew Joan will remember her gentle grace, her steadfast nature and the stories she told from a century well lived. Joan found great joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. She loved tending to her flowers, taking pride in every bloom. She gave her time to helping others through volunteering. She loved to sing especially in choirs and cherished any opportunity to sing in church. Christine Lynch

November 25, 1956 – December 11, 2025 Chris, born in Whitbourne on November 25, 1956, passed peacefully at Carbonear General Hospital on December 11, 2025, surrounded by love. She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Jane Barrett; her sisters, Holly, Sylvia, Provie and Daffodil; and her great-grandchild, Ian Clarke. Left with cherished memories are her devoted husband, Fred; her beloved children, Cathy (Mark), Samantha (Rob), Lindsay (Cole), and Eanie (Rich); her grandchildren, Ethan, Alex, Coady (Chantelle), and Dakota; and her great-grandchild, Myles. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters Lil and Barb; brothers John, Larry, Rick, and Paul; close friend and niece Allison, and many other relatives and friends whose lives she touched. Chris was a loving and devoted mother and wife, who took great pride in her children and grandchildren. She cherished watching them grow into the remarkable individuals they became and celebrated each of their achievements with joy. She treasured her annual trips to Alberta, always captivated by the breathtaking beauty of Banff and standing in awe of the mountains on every visit. She found happiness in the simple moments, especially her Sunday drives with her husband, which she truly cherished. She also eagerly anticipated her monthly girls trips with her sisters, moments filled with laughter and memories. Chris especially enjoyed any opportunity to watch her grandchildren, Ethan and Alex, play hockey, taking pride and joy in every moment. Though Chris bravely battled cancer, she refused to let her diagnosis define her. She continued to live life fully, embracing the things she loved most and sharing laughter and valued moments with her children right up until her final days. Theophilus Sullivan Butt

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Theophilus Sullivan Butt, lovingly known as Ted or Teddy. Ted passed away peacefully at his home in Norman’s Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador—affectionately known as Teddy’s Beach—on December 8, 2025, at the age of 76. Ted was a hardworking and skilled man who spent many years working as a power lines technician (linesman). He also worked in logging and roofing. Known for his strength and efficiency, Ted could climb a tree quickly and safely and have it cut down faster than anyone many had ever seen. Ted had a deep love for the outdoors and for life itself. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he found great joy in playing his guitar and singing. Always ready for a good jig and a hearty laugh, Ted’s presence brought warmth and happiness to those around him. He also shared a special bond with his beloved cat, Spook. Ted leaves behind his five amazing children: Raymond, Laura, and Linda Butt from his first marriage to the late Eileen Walsh; and Adam and Eve Temple from his second partner, the late Rhoda Temple, with whom he will be laid to rest. He will be lovingly remembered by his eleven grandchildren: Alexander, Austin, Kaden, Zachary, Isaac, Remington, Bowie, Trinity, Brooke, Joshua, and Bella. Ted was one of fourteen siblings and is survived by his brothers and sisters: Gladys, Rowena, Patrick, Mildred, Charlotte, Beatrice, Guy, Elaine, Lucy, and Lorna. He was predeceased by his brother Maurice and sisters Mary and Enid. Ted was also predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Martha Butt. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and friends. Bernard Dougald Newhook

Passed suddenly away at his home in St Johns on December 2, 2025, Bernard Dougald Newhook (Big Bird) formerly of Norman’s Cove at the age of 73. Predeceased by his son, Christopher (2003), mother and father, Elizabeth (Bessie) and Hayward Newhook, brother Perry Sr (Mum) and sister-in-law, Cindy Newhook (Mercer). Leaving to mourn his loving wife, Denise of 43 years and son Matthew. Siblings: Charlotte (Merrill), Norma (Barry), Kay (Rick) and their families,  Father and  Mother -in-law  Adrian & Bernadette Power as well as sister-in-laws, Marcie (Rick), Paula (Martin), Darlene (Jamie), brother-in-laws, Barry (Deanne), Dale (Sarina) and their families. Bern was a bricklayer by trade with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Crafterworkers, BAC, Local 1. Through his career he developed many friendships far and near. He dedicated his life to building, not just with his hands but with his heart. As a bricklayer he took great pride in his work. Leaving behind walls that still stand today after many years of enduring testament to his skill and dedication. Many thanks to Dr Vidysankar, Dr Jackman and the Palliative Care Team, for their kindness, support and home visits throughout his illness.  Thank you to Barrett’s and Holloway’s Funeral Homes for their kindness and compassion. Thank you everyone  for all the phone calls,  messages and visits to our house. It was greatly appreciated. Cremation has taken place as per Berns request. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025 at 1:00 – 3:00 pm at Chapel Arm Community Center (formerly, St John Baptist Hall, 362 Main Rd for family and friends. Fredrick Albert Gilbert

Passed peacefully away on November 29, 2025, Fredrick Albert Gilbert  at the age of 86 from the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre. Predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years Sylvia (Gosse) his Parents William and Deliah Sisters Gladys (Jack), Dorothy (Graham), Margaret (Nathan), May (Eugene). Leaving to mourn his son Terry (Joan), daughter Elaine (Dean) and Grandson Joshua (Kayla) and Nathan. Sister Isabel Johnson, brother George Gilbert (Yvonne) sisters-in-law Phyllis Noseworthy (John), Rita Griener,  Wilhemina Gosse brother-in-law Gerald Tulk. Along with a large circle of extended family and friends. Resting at Holloway’s Funeral Home, Whitbourne. Visitation Thursday December 4,2025 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. Funeral service will be held Friday December 5,2025 at 2:00 pm from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Whitbourne. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery. He would say I lived a good life. Along with his beloved Sylvia they built a wonderful life full of family and friends all of who he cherished. He was a good, honest, hard-working man who always put his family first. With a kind heart and a helping hand for any who needed it. He will be remembered by many as a man of few words but a lot of love for family, friends. A beautiful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend who won’t be forgotten.
