Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on July 10th, age 96 years. Predeceased by her parents Jacob and Mildred Smith, two sisters Marion (Lloyd) Barrett, Susie (James) Mercer. Six brothers Eugene (Mary), Cyril (Evelyn), Jacob (Thelma), Kenneth (Mildred), Ernest (Julia), and Norman (Bernice). Leaving to mourn two sisters Viola (Cyril deceased) and Muriel (Stirling deceased). 1 brother Winston (June). Also leaving to mourn a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins & other relatives, also many friends through a long teaching career and an active church work. Resting at The Good Shepherd Anglican Church, Norman’s Cove. Visitation on Monday July 14th from 2 – 4 pm. Funeral service on Tuesday July 15th at 2 pm. Anthony Craig Piercey
January 21st, 1963 – June 18th, 2025 With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Anthony Craig Piercey, known by his family and friends as Craig, on June 18th, 2025, at the age of 62. Craig passed away peacefully at St. Claire’s Hospital with loved ones close by. Craig was born in the town of Markland but spent most of his life in Long Cove/Norman’s Cove. He was known for his strong work ethic throughout his life and his dedication to everything he did, especially for his life partner, Liz. He was someone who could always be counted on. He will be remembered for his strength, humor, and the way he always showed up when it mattered most. Craig had a deep love for the outdoors, especially berry-picking with Liz and his Granddaughter, Emilie, and he never said no to lending a helping hand. Craig is predeceased by his long-term life partner, Liz, who passed just 5 months before Craig, Their beloved Pomeranian Peggy. his parents, Maire and Alfred Piercey, and his sister Tena. Craig leaves to mourn his siblings, Violetta (Gary), Woodrow (Violet-Deceased), Valerie (Danny), Mike (Marg-Deceased), Ann (Nelson-Deceased) Chris (Chan), Shane (Marsha), Jamie (Kim), and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, Liz’s children: Mike (Doreen), Betsy (Steve), Sean (Malissa), Jamie (Jaime) who will all miss him dearly. Rose Gushue (nee Spence), born on June 22, 1928, in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, in St. John’s, at the age of 96. Rose was the beloved daughter of Thomas Spence and Mary Flynn. She was a lifelong resident of Whitbourne, marrying Philip Gushue in 1948. Leaving to mourn her children: Carol Medd (Robert), Marion Gushue-Geiger (Norman), Gerry Gushue, Chris Gushue (Beverly), Rosemary Henderson (Kevin), Tim Gushue, Shawn Gushue, Howard Gushue (Rona) and son-in-law Joseph Clarke. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Patrick (Sheena), Jason (Aislinn), Keith (Lise), Blair (Lisa), Heather, Mary (Steve), Theresa (Ryan), Rory (Contessa), Brittany, Candice (Stephen), Christian, Shevon (James), Andrea (Phillip), Damien (Leanne), and Paul (Stacie). Rose was predeceased by her husband, Philip Gushue; her son Philip Gushue JR; her daughter Elizabeth Clark; her daughters-in-law’s Glenys Lester and Dianne Tibbo-Gushue and her sisters Elizabeth McMillan and Mary Power Rose will be lovingly remembered by her surviving children, grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and extended family and friends. Her life was a testament to her strength, resilience, and dedication to her family. During the last couple of years of Rose’s life there have been many important caregivers and personal friends who have loved and helped to care for her personal and spiritual needs. She was so blessed to have such a caring community of love. June 1926 – June 2025 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, being 4 days short of 99 years old. After living almost a century, this lady raised seven children, lived through two pandemics, a depression, and a world war. She was strong willed and full of determination. She was always there to help her family in anyway. She will be greatly missed. She is predeceased by her husband Silas, her son Silas T, daughter in law Linda, Son in law Gerard and Great grandchild Aiden. Also, her four brothers John Thomas, Ernest, Frank, Baker Bill and her one and only sister Gladys. Leaving to mourn her children Murdock, Sally (Junior), Ann (Greg), Shirley (Robert), Joan (Brian), Kyle (Tonya), daughter in law Florence and her brother Clarence (Cathy). Along with her 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, a large circle of nieces, nephews, and extended family, and friends. Marcella Drover Harnum ( September 6th, 1931- June 16th, 2025)
Ella Harnum of Blaketown passed peacefully away on June 16th, 2025. She resided at Lion’s Manor Seniors Home in Placentia, after a lengthy battle with Dementia. Affectionately known by many as “Small Nanny”, she had the biggest heart and touched the lives of all who knew her. She was predeceased by her first husband, Malcolm Drover, and her second husband, Nelson Harnum; her beloved son Wade; son-in-law Harold; sisters Melba, Vinnie and Emma; and brother Robert. Left behind with loving memories are her daughter Rosalind (Keith); daughter-in-law Dackenic; grandchildren Adam (Stephanie), Kristi (Trevor), Shawn (Jennifer), Terri (Morgan), Nycki (Andrew); and eleven cherished great-grandchildren who were the light of her life. Ella also leaves behind a large circle of extended family and friends. She shared many special memories with dear friends Florence Russell, Bertha Jones and Lulu Temple. She will also be fondly remembered for the bond she shared with her little cat “Sookie”. Passed peacefully away at Carbonear General Hospital on Friday, May 23, 2025, Kevin Leroy Newhook, aged 64 years, of Norman’s Cove. Predeceased by mother, Mildred and niece Kimberley. Leaving to mourn are his father, Joseph, stepdaughters Nicole (Trevor), Cynthia and Samatha (Tyler), siblings Geraldine (Peter), Sandra (Glenn), Velma (John), Wilfred (Pheobe), Lorne, and Dennis (Beverly) and a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends. Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Carbonear General Hospital for the care they provided during a number of visits. Also the family offers sincere thanks to the workers that have provided home care to Kevin over the past number of years. Kevin was a kindhearted, thoughtful and fun-loving person, a friend to many in the community, who got his greatest joy in helping to raise Nicole, Cynthia and Samatha. Cremation has taken place. It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Norman Maxwell Thorne (White). Age 82 years. Lovingly missed by his wife and best friend of almost 60 years, Neta (Vinie). Daughters, Susan(Bert), Lorelei(John). Grandchildren, Lisa, Craig(Candace), Sydney(Brandon) and Kenzie. Great Grandchildren, Claire and Allison, and beloved sister Alfreda. Dad loved bugging his childhood friend Ed Newhook (Leaf’s lost again), loved going cod fishing with son in law Bert, berry picking and trouting with the wife, having a game of crib or scrabble (in which we usually lost), but mostly just being with his family. He was a highly intelligent man who could pull facts out of nowhere, rhyme off a phone number from 40 years ago, and debate with you till the sun come up. Most of all he was a kind, caring man who had no regrets. “Laugh it off.” “Bring it on.”

Ernest Rayfield Thorne Jr.
It is with great sadness, the family of Ernest Rayfield Thorne Jr., announce his sudden passing on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Predeceased by his mother Annie, father Rayfield, brothers Eldridge and Lloyd, brother-in-law Dave and sister-in-law Marjorie. Ern is leaving to mourn his partner, Andrea and siblings, Dorcas, Bill, Rhoda (Ted), Eva (Jim), Janet (Wes), Andy (Hilda), Alfreda (Andrew), Levi (Shirlene), Lily (Len) and sister-in-law Lily. Also best friend of many years Alvin (Florence) as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ern was a loving, kind and hardworking man. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and greeted everyone with a smile. Ern had a loving way with the smallest of creatures. He loved all animals, the outdoors, trouting, walking and cod jigging. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be announced. Arthur (Wesley) Piercey
It is with deep love and sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Arthur (Wesley) Piercey on April 30, 2025, at the Placentia Health Centre. Wesley was 93 years old and surrounded by care and compassion in his final moments.
Wesley was predeceased by his devoted wife, Alfreda Piercey, his parents Fred and Maggie Piercey, his sister Cecily, his daughter Pansy Bernice, and son-n-laws Maurice Butt and Richard Schappert.
Wesley was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Donna Butt, Margaret Traverse (Chris Traverse), and June Schappert, and his son Matthew Piercey (Carolyn Jones). He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Justin Piercey, Maggie Butt, Matthew Butt, Bradley Schappert, Grant Traverse, Michael Traverse, and Eli Piercey, as well as by his great-grandchildren Kayden, Taylor, Colten and Braxton.
A man of quiet wisdom and immense heart, Wesley found peace and joy in the woods, especially with a fishing rod in hand. He was the kindest man we’ve ever known — gentle, strong, and always present with unwavering love. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his legacy will live on in the lives he shaped with patience, humour, and deep care.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Collingwood Downs Retirement Residence, where Dad lived with dignity and comfort for the past six years. We are also deeply grateful to the exceptional team at Placentia Health Centre for their compassionate care and support during his final days.
We would also like to thank all of Dad’s extended family and friends for their ongoing love and support. Your kindness has been a source of strength during this time.
