Eleanor Elizabeth (Betty) R.N. (Retired) WILLIAMS

Passed peacefully away at the Reactivation Care Centre in Toronto on Friday, June 18, 2021, Betty Williams of Bellevue, formerly St. John’s, Aged 86 Years. Predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Reuben (Chico) Williams and Ex-Husband Edward (Eddy) Greene, her sister Dallas Brown and Parents Richard (Dick) and Eleanor (Nellie) Cook. Left with loving memories her sister and best friend Marie Walsh, her brother Richard Cook and her children David Greene (Deborah), Susan Greene (Helen), Kevin Greene, Karen Giblon, Stephen Greene (Annie). Stepdaughters, Brandi Bryant and Natasha Williams-Kolarczyk, Grandchildren Christopher & Adam Greene, Rachel Pimienta (Alan), Schmuel, Tamara, Aviva & Binyamin Giblon, Ireland Greene-Gibbs, AJ, Oliver & Simon Bryant, and Naomi Williams. Great-Grandchildren Samson Coombs and Amellia Pimienta, as well as numerous Nieces and Nephews. Sister-in-Law, Dianne Trott and all the extended family in Bermuda, the US, and other parts of the world. Life-long friends include Jean Suttie, Shirley Tucker, Shirley Reid and Judy Chubbs. There are many other friends, especially in Bellevue area, and please know you were all very special to her. Betty’s achievements and successes started in kindergarten at Bishop Spencer, where she participated in plays and programs, earned her Golden Cord in Girl Guides, and continued as captain of several sports teams. Betty was voted “Ideal Spencer Girl” and graduated in 1952. A consummate athlete she was an outstanding pitcher in the St. John’s Ladies softball in the late 40’s and early 50’s for her team, The Tornados. She was the first female athlete inducted to the St. John’s Softball Hall of Fame in 1978. Betty’s proudest accomplishment, after motherhood, was being a Nurse. Graduating from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1956, she advanced in her career, working as Emergency and ICU Supervisor, then Ambulatory Care Manager until her retirement in 1983. She then helped establish the Provincial Organ Procurement program, travelled the province teaching Respiratory care, and set-up training for and managed the Para-Medic Ambulance service for St. John’s. Always active in the community she volunteered innumerable hours to several causes including Co-operative Housing, St. John’s Emergency Planning, The Lung Association, UCW, etc. In recognition of her efforts Betty was named “St. John’s Citizen of the Year” in 1979. A Graveside Service and Interment to take place Sunday, July 4, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Thornlea United Church and Cemetery. A reception and celebration of her life to follow at the church hall (Covid restrictions will apply).
