    Nov. 24, 1956 – July 15, 2020

With saddened hearts we announce the passing of Gerard (Pop) Brothers on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at the Health Science, St. John’s.

He is predeceased by his parents Arthur & Lucy Brothers and parents-in-law Pad & Alice Kelly. Leaving to morn with fond and loving memories his wife of almost 40 years Patsy, his children who he dearly loved – Curtis (Amy), Evan, Leann, Sonya (Steve) & Taylor. His cherished Grandchildren Patrick, Lucy, Gabe, Ben and Charlie. His brothers – Jerry (Beulah), Clifford (Carol Ann) and sisters Kay, Monnie, and Anne (Alton Whiffen). Brother-in-law John Hanrahan (Beth), Bob Walsh (Donna) and Jim Kelly (Cathy).

Pop (as he was known to most people) was truly loved by everyone. He enjoyed life to the fullest and will be dearly missed by his family, many relatives and a large number of special friends (especially his card buddies). Although he may have had some struggles over the last few years, he always found a way to make those around him smile and laugh.

Cremation has taken place and unfortunately, due to these difficult times, there will be a private visitation only at Holloways Funeral Home, Whitbourne on Saturday 2 pm – 6 pm and on Sunday, July 19, 1 pm – 4 pm. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date when family and friends are able to get together.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice

Patsy and all of Pops’ family I can’t even find the words to say how saddened I was to hear of his passing. I’ve known Pop for almost 20 years and working with him at Laval High School we had so many good times together. I could honestly say, Pop was one is the nicest, sweetest genuine guys on this earth. He always had a smile on his face (sometimes up to badness) and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him left being a friend. He lived life to the fullest and I’m sure he will continue that in his next life. I will certainly miss you Pop Brothers and I know all your family and many friends will take care of Patsy and your family for you. RIP my friend.

“Pop”, as we called him as students, was filled with life and always welcomed us with open arms. When I was late in the mornings, he’d open the door and say, “go on, you’ll make it to first period”. I loved that. He was never urgent. Every student found a friend in Pop. I remember one time in particular I was going through a tough time and he sat with me and reassured me that life is unpredictable, but it sure is great to be alive and to be able to appreciate the things that we had while we could. I hold that conversation close, as it helped me through the current situation and I often think about those words when something else comes up. It was a pleasure to know such a great soul. Thank you for the wisdom, Pop. Rest easy.

Patsy and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. When I heard the news, it floored me, I think I am still in shock. A big part of the person I am today comes from my time with Pop and Clifford. I will forever be grateful for that. You welcomed me into your homes and treated me as family. I can not express what that meant to me. To me and many others, Pop could be just that, “Pop” and give advice when needed but could also be a brother and friend when the time called for a beer and a laugh. The world is a sadder place without him. He was the best of men and will always have a spot in my heart. RIP old friend.
